A trial firm for every type of civil dispute
Most civil cases settle — but the terms of any settlement are determined by the credible threat of trial. When opposing counsel knows your attorneys are prepared and willing to try the case, you negotiate from a position of strength.
Stavros Law P.C. is a trial firm. Our attorneys have tried cases to verdict in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah and in Utah's state district courts. We represent both plaintiffs and defendants, giving us insight into how opposing counsel will approach your case.
We handle civil litigation across four primary areas: employment law, business law, real estate law, and health care law. Whatever the dispute, we bring the same trial-ready approach.

Common questions
Civil litigation FAQ
What types of civil litigation does Stavros Law handle?
Stavros Law P.C. handles civil litigation across four primary areas: employment law (wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage disputes), business law (breach of contract, trade secrets, shareholder disputes, business torts), real estate law (quiet title, boundary disputes, adverse possession, purchase agreement disputes), and health care law (provider disputes, regulatory matters, employment claims in health care settings).
Does Stavros Law represent both plaintiffs and defendants?
Yes. Stavros Law P.C. represents both plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation. We represent employees and employers, buyers and sellers, property owners and claimants, and health care providers and patients depending on the nature of the dispute. Our trial experience on both sides of the courtroom gives us insight into how opposing counsel will approach your case.
What courts does Stavros Law practice in?
Stavros Law P.C. practices in Utah's state district courts, the Utah Court of Appeals, the Utah Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. We also represent clients in arbitration and mediation proceedings.
What is the difference between civil litigation and criminal litigation?
Civil litigation involves disputes between private parties — individuals, businesses, or organizations — where the remedy is typically money damages or injunctive relief. Criminal litigation involves the government prosecuting an individual or entity for a crime, where the remedy may include incarceration. Stavros Law P.C. handles civil litigation only.
How does Stavros Law approach civil litigation?
Stavros Law P.C. is a trial firm. We prepare every case as if it will go to trial, which gives our clients maximum leverage in settlement negotiations. Our attorneys have tried cases to verdict in both federal and state court. We focus on understanding the full context of each dispute — the facts, the law, and the client's goals — and developing a litigation strategy designed to achieve the best possible outcome.
Does Stavros Law handle appeals?
Yes. Stavros Law P.C. handles appeals in the Utah Court of Appeals, the Utah Supreme Court, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. We represent clients who have received an adverse trial court ruling and want to challenge it on appeal, and we defend favorable trial court rulings against appeal by the opposing party.
What is the civil litigation process in Utah?
Civil litigation in Utah typically begins with filing a complaint, followed by the defendant's answer. The parties then conduct discovery — exchanging documents, taking depositions, and responding to interrogatories. After discovery, either party may file motions for summary judgment. If the case is not resolved by motion or settlement, it proceeds to trial. The entire process typically takes one to three years in state court and one to four years in federal court, depending on the complexity of the case.
How are civil litigation fees structured?
Stavros Law P.C. handles civil litigation on both contingency fee and hourly fee arrangements, depending on the nature of the case. Employment cases on behalf of employees are typically handled on a contingency fee basis — meaning no fee unless we recover. Business litigation, real estate litigation, and defense matters are typically handled on an hourly basis. We discuss fee arrangements during the initial consultation.
